A few weeks back one of our Social Workers informed us that one of our Kinship families needed help paying their rent deposit. This grandmother and her eight grandchildren had to move very quickly, because the house they were currently renting was being put up for sale. That's where Janet came in. She emailed us asking if there was a family we knew of, where she could help pay their rent. We just so happened to have the perfect family, this grandmother and her eight grandchildren. Janet was thrilled about this family and graciously offered to help with their deposit. Below is a wonderful story about real people helping real people and being able to make a real life connection with their donation.
Can you tell me a little bit about who you are?
My name is Janet Thew and my job for the past 20 plus years has been doing various volunteer work. My husband has a good job so that’s given me the freedom to do what I’ve really wanted to do and that is to make a difference in the world! So that’s what I’ve done, from animals, to the environment, getting involved with literacy projects and even serving as a Planning Commissioner in Loomis for 10 years. My husband and I have been married 36 years and we built our house in Loomis about 20 years ago.
How did you first hear about Lilliput?
It was through a Loomis Community Post on Facebook for the group Defending The Cause Regional Alliance. They were looking for people who wanted to help local foster families, so I signed up. That group started posting things families needed and one of those posts was asking for holiday gifts for children in foster care. One of the agencies needing gifts was Lilliput, so I bought some gifts and dropped them off at their Citrus Heights office. When I visited their office I was very impressed with their organization and the staff there, it was such a wonderful experience! When the COVID-19 crisis hit and people began struggling to pay rent, I was thinking why not help someone directly and pay their rent. So immediately I thought of Lilliput Families.
What attracts you to the cause of helping families with children in foster care?
There’s a local foster agency here in Loomis that I’ve donated to in the past and this is how I got introduced to the industry. I learned about some of the problems these kids face when they age out of care with no family support and that’s what motivated me to help out. We chose not to have kids of our own, and I feel that those in foster care and post-foster care need attention and support the most.
Can you tell us about your experience with helping one of Lilliput’s foster families?
When I had the idea to help a family with rent, Lilliput was the first organization that came to mind. So about three weeks ago I was sitting on the couch and I told myself, you know it’s about time I do something about my idea of helping a family pay their rent. I immediately emailed Lilliput Families explaining my idea and asking if they had a family that I could help. Within minutes someone from Lilliput got back to me and they told me how they actually had a situation where a family needed help with their deposit so that they could move into a new house. I immediately lit up and thought, wow this is awesome! It was meant to be. Within an hour I made a donation to Lilliput Families and they were able to help pay this family's deposit and now that family is in a new home! The joy that this brought me, just totally made my day. It was the most tremendous sense of joy that I felt and I want other people to feel that joy as well!
Is there anything you would like to share with our donors?
I hope that they will consider something like this, reaching out to Lilliput directly to see if there is something they could do to make an immediate difference for the families and children in foster care.
Anything else you might like to add?
Thinking outside the box to find ways to help people personally is incredibly rewarding. Call Lilliput Families and ask them what you can do to help right now. I encourage people to reach out to the organizations that support the causes close to them and ask them how you can directly help during this time.
During the COVID-19 public health crisis, our services have continued uninterrupted. Our children and families need us, and we need YOU, now more than ever. Your donations will help assure that our children and families are safe and supported during this most critical time.
